EU and UK Demand Stop to West Bank Settler Violence Surge

Protest signs during a demonstration where the EU and UK demand stop to West Bank violence.

The EU and UK joint statement reiterate concern over the increase in settler violence in the West Bank. This joint statement accompanies the further aggravation of violence directed at Palestinians. This violence has been documented following the outbreak of the war with Iran. International stakeholders are now calling on Israel to restore order and secure the safety of the occupied people.

Over the last eleven days of the conflict, the United Nations has reported the deaths of six Palestinians. The killings have been labeled “appalling” by the UK government. The European Union has also characterized violence of that magnitude as “unacceptable.” With this joint statement, the EU and UK have highlighted the increasing concern of the international community on violence in the region.

Rising Tensions in the Occupied West Bank

Settler violence has engendered concern and the proliferation of risk for the 3.3 million Palestinians living in the region. There are approximately 700,000 Jewish settlers in 160 settlements in the West Bank and East Jerusalem, which the majority of the world considers illegal settlements. Palestinians claim this land for a future independent state.

With regard to violence in the West Bank, the Israeli military has made statements everywhere condemning violence. They say they are working to coordinate justice in the international community. However, the violent attacks in the West Bank are only a small part of a violence problem. The EU and UK have suggested things that show they feel the violence problems are bigger than the violence problems the EU and UK have suggested.

The Iran War and Impact of West Bank Internally Displaced Persons

The violence of the Iran wars has moved focus away from the West Bank for some time. As a result of the wars, some factions have moved away from self restraint and have begun to focus more on the West Bank.

The EU and UK have requested violence temporarily. They are attempting to avert a larger humanitarian crisis. They feel that violence in the West Bank will further exacerbate the regional war.

There is an immediate call for preventive measures from the UK and the EU. They argue that the cycle of retaliation will persist without active measures. Humanitarian organizations are also involved due to the limited availability of resources. The Israeli government remains without a clear answer to the world’s pressing demands.
