EU Top Diplomat Rejects Europe Bashing by US

EU top diplomat rejects Europe ‘bashing’ by US during a speech in Munich.

EU foreign policy chief Kaja Kallas stated her firm opposition to America’s Europe bashing during her Sunday speech at the Munich Security Conference. She countered accusations that the U.S. are guilty of civilizational erasure of Europe and argued that the U.S. does not collapse Europe. She believes that America’s rhetoric presents Europe to the world with collapse.

Recently, U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio argued that Europe and America are partners. He encouraged Europe to limit mass migration for the preservation of European civilization. Kallas argued that there is not an antagonist position on each matter between the two.

Reclaiming European Agency

With the forums, the distance between the U.S. and its European allies has become more prominent and painful. As President Donald Trump disrupts longstanding commitments and alliances, European officials increasingly communicate the necessity for Europe to assume responsibility for its own defense. Kallas urged for an urgent need to regain European agency.

French Minister for European Affairs Benjamin Haddad showed this sentiment. He complained that Europe keeps focusing on what America says and argued that Europe has the right to defend itself and rearm. He cautioned that Europe should not just snooze after statements from Washington.

Russia is broken

Kallas mentioned the war in Ukraine again insisting that Russia is no superpower. To her, Russia is broke. The EU’s chief diplomat suggested a number of more severe measures against Moscow that would include:

  • limiting the size of Russia’s military
  • requiring Russia to compensate for the damage it has caused
  • charging Russia with war crimes

Differences on Migration and Freedom

The U.S. government recently put out a National Security Strategy report. It accused Europe of implementing migration policies that would render the continent unrecognizable in twenty years. European leaders were taken aback by such comments.

Analysts have observed that European countries are at the top of the Press Freedom Index, while the U.S. is at the bottom. Such disagreements have showen the deep ideological split between the current U.S. government and the European leaders. It has been stated that the conference ended with Europe intending to enhance its own capabilities in the face of U.S. pressure.
