Trump State of the Union Heralds Border Policies

President Trump delivers a combative Trump State of Union address to a joint session of Congress.

President Donald Trump recorded a new longest State of the Union, at 1 hour and 47 minutes, and kept the tradition of boasting about profoundly mediocre accomplishments. This recorded address features his first year claim of, turnaround for the ages. Leading up to this event, poll after poll, show a steady decline for Trump and his campaign selling American potential.

This 2020 State of the Union, similar to his other 3, was seasoned with patriotic moments by military veterans, and now, the Olympic men’s hockey team.

Border and Economic Barriers

With his signature lie, Our nation is back, he talked about Trump’s America First policies. He actively lied about the stock market, wages, and gas prices; all of which, at the time, had begun to rise. He stated, simple and without support, that illegal crossing was at an all time low.

This year’s great American speech finished with We are winning again! .

The president took the chance to insult the Democrats for being crazy for not considering his priorities. When it came to the president discussing immigration, the heat went up in the room. He talked about the increase of undocumented immigrants to justify a need for tougher laws. He talking about the federal agents shooting and killing people in Minneapolis, but instead focused on the ‘open border’ issue.

More Tension Around the Tariffs and Supreme Court

One of the most embarrassing moments of the Trump State of the Union came with his trade policy. He promised to keep up his massive tariff policy even after losing in the Supreme Court. Three of the justices who ruled against him sat in the front row and showed no reaction.

The Supreme Court took a verbal beating from the President. Most of the Republicans jumped on this part of the speech. This part was fairly uncomfortable as a lot of Republicans did not want to hear it. Most Republicans do not want to see the economic fallout of these tariffs. The President’s handshake with Chief Justice Roberts was very brief, and this shows the divide between the branches of government.

Focus and Misdirection

The sheer number of missiles being stationed in the Middle East is concerning. However, policies regarding these missiles and the Middle East remain unaddressed. Trump spent a total of three minutes discussing missiles and the Middle East, and the only thing he stated was that he prefers diplomacy. Other world leaders are waiting and hoping to hear a specific plan, but Trump simply stated that there was no plan and no explanation to calm world leaders.

The response was met with criticism and noticed Spanberger’s hit Trump was warning people and not giving them more financial and economical support. His response to the Union became a campaign and riled people up. It’s unclear if the response struck any nerves in the opponent’s camp.
