Trump Orders Agencies to Stop Using Anthropic

Trump orders federal agencies to stop using Anthropic AI tools as shown on a smartphone screen.

Donald Trump has made a significant decision regarding his termination of any services the federal government will provide to the Anthropic company. His decision was made public via the platform Truth Social. His reasoning behind this is due to a dispute with Anthropic regarding the services the U.S. government department of defense (the Pentagon) will provide. Trump claims he will not permit a “woke company” to determine how our military can operate.

The dispute began when Anthropic placed an “ethical” restriction on the use of any of its services, specifically the Claude AI. There is a company policy, referred to as a ‘red line’ policy, against using its services to monitor, surveillance, or operate weapons autonomously. Trump claims this policy endangers the lives of Americans and, more importantly, the security of the United States.

Anthropic Classified Supply Chain Risk

After the President’s tweet, Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth took the step of instructing the Pentagon to classify Anthropic as a ‘supply chain risk’. This is the first time a large American technology company has received this label. Hegseth also instructed military contractors to cease all dealings with the startup.

Dario Amodei, CEO of Anthropic, has pledged to challenge the classification in the courts, claiming the classification is ‘illegally arbitrary’. Amodei has said there is no amount of bullying that is going to change their position on human rights, while also arguing the ‘ban’ does not impact the ability of contractors to utilize their AI on other clients.

OpenAI Signs Another Deal with The Pentagon

In a surprising development, rival company OpenAI has also announced another deal with the Pentagon. CEO Sam Altman states that their technology will now be operational on ‘classified’ networks. In an interesting remark, Altman asserted that OpenAI also has ‘red lines’ regarding ‘mass surveillance’.

The Pentagon has not justified why it accepted OpenAI’s conditions while punishing Anthropic. This has brought criticism from a number of politicians. Senator Mark Warner suggested the move might be political. He inferred that the administration might be ‘picking winners’ from the contractors.

The Future of AI in Government

The government plans to stop using products by Anthropic in the next six months. Trump stated that there would be “criminal consequences” if the company does not comply in the meantime. Tech experts believe that the fight with Anthropic could discourage private companies from partnering with the government in the future.

Currently, Anthropic has a valuation of $380 billion. Experts believe the company does not need the government’s funding to survive. This fight is how the world is watching what the ethics defending the future of warfare will look like.
