Trump Set to Attend White House Correspondent’s Dinner

President Trump to attend White House press dinner for the first time in office.

In a post made to Truth Social, Donald Trump officially signed on to attend the White House Correspondent’s Dinner. This is viewed as a major reversal for the President as he has boycotted the event for his entire first term, as well as the beginning of his second. Trump is quoted saying he accepted the invitation to honor the country’s 250th birthday.

The President has made the claim he will make the event the country’s “greatest and most spectacular dinner ever.” Trump has previously gone on the record to call members of the press “the enemy of the people.” He has always felt the media coverage of him was unfair and now he has the press coverage he will be receiving and it shows a change in attitude towards the press.

A Long Standing Tradition

Trump accepting the invitation is a first in history as most Presidents do not forgo the event. The White House Correspondents Association began hosting this event in the year of 1924 The dinner is meant to honor the first amendment and is called ‘Nerd Prom’ as it is a heavily celebrity filled event.

Trump’s relationship with the press has remained hostile. His administration has closed the press secretary’s doors. Last year, the association canceled its comedy headliner for political reasons. By inviting Trump to the White House Correspondents’ Dinner, it seems both parties are looking to end the hostilities—for now, at least.

Recalling the 2011 Roast

Trump is no newcomer to this event. He attended the event in 2011 before his presidency. That evening, Barack Obama happened to roast Trump in front of the audience. Many feel that it was that moment that started off his political career. The upcoming event will be the first time he will be at the head table of the event as the honoree.

The event will happen on April 24 at the Washington Hilton. The headliner this year will be mentalist Oz Pearlman. The event is expected to have the usual banter and speech by the president. Many are wondering how Trump is going to take the traditional roast.

Examining the Political Landscape of the Declaration

Politically, this announcement comes at a rough time at the White House. The latest polls have shown that people have little confidence in the new military endeavors. Trump’s ratings have also been at record lows. He has decided to skip most social events, most likely to protect his declining approval ratings.

The President will be sitting in a room full of journalists, something that will be watched by all of the world. It is a unique opportunity for the media. Almost ever, the media and the executive branch get a chance to mingle. It is unclear whether this will improve relations with the press. For the moment, the aim is to make the dinner in April a monumental success.
