Former President Bill Clinton interacted with the Republican’s House Oversight Committee this past Friday. In a closed 6-hour deposition, Clinton remarked that he “saw nothing” and “did nothing wrong” with his connections to Jeffrey Epstein. This is the first time in 40 years a former president has testified against Congress.
The deposition was done in Chappaqua, New York, a day after his wife, Hillary Clinton, had a deposition in the same case. Bill Clinton stated that he had no knowledge of Epstein’s abuse and crimes, and if he had, he would have reported to Epstein. Bill Clinton disputes wrongdoing as the committee persists in probing Epstein’s criminal associates.
The Closed-Door Deposition’s Secrets
Oversight Chair James Comer called this deposition very productive. He reported that Clinton answered all of the questions, and during the meeting, he exhibited very good people skills. Congressmen asked the former president about several undated photos from the 90s and 2000s. In the photos, Clinton was seen with Epstein and Ghislaine Maxwell in a social event that took place in a jacuzzi.
Clinton made it clear that he did not recognize the woman in the photographs. He denied having sexual relations with her or having ever been to Epstein’s private island. He acknowledged having engaged in some foundation work with Epstein in 2002 and 2003, but maintained that he had not communicated with Epstein in over 10 years. This is yet another example of Bill Clinton’s wrongdoing denials, which is consistent with his prior sworn testimony.
Political Conflicts Regarding Trump and the Epstein Documents
Testimony covered a variety of current political rivalries. Some Democrats on the committee have claimed that if the Clintons are testifying, then Donald Trump should also be subjected to examination. Congressman Robert Garcia asserted that Clinton said something new about prior conversations she had with Trump. In particular, she claimed Trump told her that his falling out with Epstein was a “land dispute”.
Hillary Clinton has said that the committee is trying to distract focus from Trump’s Epstein allegations by using her family. Trump has repeatedly claimed he did nothing wrong and that he ceased his friendship with Epstein many years ago. Trump also recently told the Attorney General to investigate Epstein’s relationships with Democrats. In the ongoing political firestorm, Bill Clinton has also stated that he has done nothing wrong and has called for the complete unredacting of any remaining department documents.
An Unusual Moment in History for Congress
It is highly unusual for a current or former president to testify before Congress, with the last instance being Gerald R. Ford in 1983. This testimony demonstrates the extent of the public interest in the Epstein matter. The House Oversight Committee is determined to achieve justice for the victims of Epstein’s trafficking ring.
The committee anticipates publishing a video recording and written transcripts of these depositions shortly. Clinton stated that he anticipates the public’s response to his testimony and hopes that it encourages others to testify. At this stage, the investigation of the ‘Epstein orbit’ is still growing. Congress is contemplating subpoenas for additional targets, including the Commerce Secretary, Howard Lutnick.
