Colombian Congresswoman, Ángela Vergara, has come under fire for supporting Trump and denouncing her son’s arrest by ICE. Angela Vergara is reported to be a supporter of Donald Trump. She is now portraying Rafael Alonso Vergara, her son who is 22 years old, as suffering. She claims that a facility in Louisiana has kept him imprisoned and chained for twenty days.
Congresswoman Vergara claims her son was in the process of adjusting his immigration status. She claims he worked legally in the United States and that he has a work permit and Social Security number. She states that he has asylum and a court hearing that is scheduled for 2028. Despite that, he was still detained by ICE. This was during what they termed a routine check. This Colombian Trump supporter denounces son’s arrest and continually receives backlash for her politically charged views.
Unethical Detention of Immigrants
Vergara described the River Correctional Detention Center as having “inhumane” conditions. She claims her son has to share a cell with 70 other detainees, some of whom are ill. It has also been reported that the group has gone 12 hours without access to drinking water.
To try and expedite the process, the Vergara family asked for a voluntary return to Colombia. They are, however, experiencing a “bottleneck” with repatriation flights. Currently, thousands of Colombians are stuck in the United States and are searching for a way to return home. This Colombian Trump supporter denounces son’s arrest is bringing attention to the unfortunate circumstances.
Criticism of Political Paradox
The case has resulted in lots of commentary on the internet. Many circulate an image of the page Vergara has, and caption it with the word “hypocrite.” Her case is very similar to a lot of people in the Cruz party, which openly celebrates the Trump return to the White House and the immigration policies that most Americans view as draconian.
Vergara says she has a message for the public: she accuses people of assuming that, because she is conservative, she must be a human rights violator. She has never endorsed the idea of celebrating the deportation of human beings. Now she is on the case of the Colombian government in order to accelerate the pace of flights because of the so-called “humanitarian” nature.
Trump’s Immigration Policy
With the return of Donald Trump to the political scene, he has had the ability to increase the power of the Immigration and Customs Enforcement agency (ICE) to unprecedented levels. In the last year of his administration, more than 650,000 deportations occurred. Numerous states in the United States have seen an increase in raids or snap checks as a result of this new policy. This is the type of policy that is supposedly a part of the campaign for a second term in office for Donald Trump.
The Colombian government has now signed an agreement to restart repatriation flights. Currently, they have only scheduled about 1 flight per week. Vergara encourages the Petro administration to arrange additional flights with the Air Force.
