Trump Imposes New 10% Tariff After Supreme Court Rejection

Trump imposes new 10% tariff during a White House press conference after the Supreme Court ruling.

President Donald Trump added a 10 percent global tariff to his previous trade policy a few hours after the Supreme Court made his global taxing of imports illegal. Trump is angry at the Supreme Court and called the decision of 6-3 “terrible”. He derogatorily refers to the justices who voted against him as “fools”

The Supreme Court said that the president illegally overshot his authority using emergency powers to bypass Congress. Chief Roberts said that the emergency powers to impose tariffs lie in the domain of the Congress. This is a significant win for US businesses that have been suffering from high costs of imports.

Trump is very angry at his own appointees and fellow conservatives Justice Amy Coney Barrett and Justice Neil Gorsuch. They voted along with the liberals and Chief Justice Roberts in the majority opinion. Trump called the conservative justices “disloyal” and “unpatriotic”. He said they were “lap dogs” for voting against his economic policy.

“At least I didn’t take Roberts,” Trump said when asked who he picked, referring to the George W. Bush appointee. He said that the Democratic appointees remain loyal to the party whereas his appointees do not. Trump has lost in court, but he still claims he has “great alternatives” to keep his trade wall up.

Starting Tuesday, There Will Be An Added 10% Tariff

On Tuesday, there will be an added 10% tariff. The current rules state that there can be an added tariff for 150 days unless Congress decides to challenge it. Trump says the taxes will benefit the US economy and hurt China, Mexico, and Canada.

After the court ruling, the stock market reacted positively with the S&P 500 having a 0.7% increase which is a positive reaction to the ruling. The country also experienced a large amount of relief and frustration because of the expectation of the government to refund billions of “improperly collected” duties. Trump warned that the refund legal battle will take years.

Global Trade Uncertainty and Talks with Iran

The ruling adds more ambiguity to the global trade landscape. While businesses applaud the removal of a “thousand-pound weight,” they now have to deal with a new 10\% tax. This sort of yo-yoing policy creates great difficulty in long-term supply chain planning for American businesses.

At the same time, the trade policy compromises American foreign policy. Trump is contemplating a limited military strike to coerce Iran to strike a deal regarding nuclear weapons. Leading Democrats are publicly advising the president not to act without a vote from Congress. Amidst trade battles and military threats, the White House is undertaking multi-faceted, aggressive, and high-stakes policymaking.
